Founded in 2008, Cayamo was conceived as an annual festival at sea featuring the best singer-songwriters alongside up and coming musicians on the cusp of discovery. On Cayamo, music lovers could come together in the same space without the distractions of the real world. The first festival featured performances by Lyle Lovett, Emmylou Harris, John Hiatt, Shawn Colvin, Brandi Carlile, Buddy Miller, and many many more. What began as a trepidatious experiment soon blossomed into a beautiful celebration rooted in musical collaboration and shared experience. Cayamo is a made-up name spun from the word “cay,” for island, and “amo,” for love, and it wasn’t a vacation that was easy to explain at first. A music festival on a cruise ship? Well, yes, but as any past guest or artist will tell you, it’s also so much more. As the cruise expanded from five, to six, to seven days, and moved from a Carnival ship to Norwegian Cruise Line, where we would soon find our longtime floating home in the Norwegian Pearl, one thing became obvious – once you know, you know.
Together we’ve welcomed back old friends year after year and embraced new faces with open arms. We’ve visited 19 unique ports and witnessed countless “only on Cayamo” musical collaborations, tributes, and unforgettable moments big and small. Musicians have played alongside their professional heroes and met their future collaborators for the first time, while guests have discovered their “new favorite artist,” or even met a new best friend or their future spouse. Cayamo’s line-up has seen repeat performances from all of the original 2008 headliners and also welcomed new artists into the fold including the late and great John Prine as well as Brian Wilson, Jeff Tweedy, Mavis Staples, Rodney Crowell, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Dawes, Keb Mo, Billy Bragg, Indigo Girls . . . and that just covers a small portion of the last two years. Visit the Past Lineups Page for our full artist history. Cayamo 2021 may go down in the history books as the year it “cayalmost” happened but we look forward to coming back strong when we can all safely return to our journey through song.
